Old Bridge-1

…A view from the level of the levee bank overlooking the mighty Macintyre River with an outlook to the Border Bridge..  You are there with your family and friends, sipping a beer, or wine, or coffee or a tea..   Peaceful, serene even, and something quite unique.  Imagine, weddings, social gatherings, even Welcome to Goondiwindi ceremonies could be staged..

Cast your mind back through the many Future Ideas workshops throughout the years (probably since the early 1990’s) and this concept has been raised at every one of those workshops.  Opening up our access to our greatest asset and our lifeblood, the Macintyre River was one of the highest polling outcomes.    The Herbert Street end of the river had been touted as a “restaurant” or a floating pontoon in the river itself.

However there could be other options that would achieve the 1990s dream.   The concept (albeit not as elaborate as those mentioned in the 1990’s) of an area closer to the Border Bridge.  Our levee bank would not be compromised by any new works.

Talks of a river precinct a number of years faltered due to the medical success at the hospital.  An idea, a will to this concept to succeed, could be in the offering..

Adventure Ride to Goondiwindi

Adventure Ride

Thanks to the team organising this inaugural event.  We are getting closer to making it happen.  Just need to nut out a few things.  My sincere thanks to local man Stuart Woods- without his assistance this wouldn’t have become a reality.  Stuart has mapped the route and given of his own time to make sure that the route would appeal to the crowd of people we think are hungry for this sort of ride.  Thank you again Stuart.

You all would know of my belief in this sort of “tourism” for Goondiwindi.  Expect an announcement by the end of this month, May.  Get in quick when we announce-limited spaces on this inaugural adventure tour to Goondiwindi.

Only one in the world on the road and it visited Goondiwindi

Don Hill 1Don Hill 2

Take a look at this 1916 Model T Ford with accessory Telescoping Touring Apartment. There is only one original in a US museum, and one other replica (also in the US).

Did you notice this vehicle in Goondiwindi last June (2015) for the Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Bikes weekend.  Or did you see it on the road in the “The Great Train Race” between Goondiwindi and Toobeah when the steam train and a slew of Model T’s faced off or down Marshall Street in the parade?  The above photograph was taken at the Natural Heritage and Water Park facility in Goondiwindi Sunday 7 June 2015.

If you did you saw something that very few in the world have ever seen- a working version of this 1916 beauty.

Well grab another chance at the RACQ Motorfest at Eagle Farm Sunday 10 July 2016.

Talwood Mens Day Out

Talwood Day Out

While the Weengallon Pink Ladies Day (in aid of women’s breast cancer) is a landmark event on the social calendar for the ladies, the inaugural Talwood Men’s Day out has also some lofty ambitions.

Held in Talwood, Queensland some 90 kilometres from Goondiwindi, this inaugural event wants to turn the spotlight on issues around men’s health.

Organisers hope this event can become a yearly event and grow in stature and prominence the same that the Weengallon Ladies have spotlighted women’s cancers.

So now that harvest is done and dusted grab a few of your mates and head to Talwood for a few hours of information, mateship, food and drinks.  The organisers promise you won’t be disappointed.

Goondiwindi Community Grant Information

leave a comment »

I am constantly asked what grants are out there for community groups. The dilemma is these groups could/would apply even for the smaller grants if only they know.

Well I have decided to set up a Face Book called “Goondiwindi Community Grant Information” and I am tailoring it specifically to our region.

So when I see a grant that could be applicable to our region I will post on the Face Book page. A lot of grants won’t be applicable so they won’t make the grade.

Here is the link and I hope you get some value from this page.

Knowledge in my view is power.

Lions keep on giving

Dave McMahon Lions

The Lions Club of Goondiwindi each year disburses money from funds they raise.  We all know the great work they do in the Goondiwindi community from helping out on the Show gate to the iconic Christmas Eve Fireworks celebrations now at Riddles Oval.

This group of men and women unselfishly put themselves forward each year to work for the community.

Wayne Banks, long time Lions member, hands over a cheque to me as President of the Customs House Committee.

Thank you Lions Club of Goondiwindi for your donation and the acknowledgement they we were worthy recipients of your hard-earned money.
