St Mary’s Convent 100 in 2011

Celebrations are well in hand for the 100th anniversary of the opening of St Mary’s Convent School in Goondiwindi.  It was opened on 30th April 1911 by the Archbishop.  I hear that a big event is planned around the time of the school’s fete, The Midnight Carnival.  No doubt there will be stories leading up to the event via the Goondiwindi Argus . Now this celebration will be a big one and a lot of hard work will be done to ensure that it is celebrated in style.!  Attached is the front cover of  a booklet put out for the 75th anniversary.  If you are not aware the title of the booklet “Mercy on the Macintyre” relates to the direct involvement the Sisters of Mercy had in the running of the school until the late 1980’s.

The Yelarbon community are in the planning stages for their 100th year anniversary of the opening of the school.  It was opened on 16 July 1912 with a  celebration in early September 2012 planned.  I will be attending a meeting  tomorrow (Monday) at 3p.m in Yelarbon to hear how’s it is all going.   Likewise the Texas School celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2012 having been opened on 6 June 1887.  Attached is a photograph from a  billy goat race at the Texas State School in 1908.   I remember the 125th anniversary of the Goondiwindi State School in 1989 and they are huge community celebrations.
